Back to the race, I wasn’t getting into the zone where I could let my wander about, all I could think about was how many more miles I had left. My longest run prior to the race had been 10 miles, but this race had me losing my mojo at five, things started to turn around however, after reaching the turning/mid point. Suddenly, six more miles seemed completely manageable and I started to pick up my pace a bit. Walkers started to gain in numbers, probably from starting out too fast, so I finally had the satisfaction of passing people instead of the other way around. After a while, I made it my mission to pass every single walker I saw which gave me an extra dose of motivation and made me realize that I had probably been going a bit too slow before. Oh well. Finally, when it was down to the last one or two miles, I started going as fast as I could, which was quite exhilarating actually. I finished completely out of breath with a big smile on my face. One of the things I love about road races is that since most begin so early, you feel like you’ve already accomplished something huge before the day has even begun.
