I have yet to recover from Kyuhyun’s solo concert, and I’m not sure I ever will in the two years that he’ll be gone. ㅠㅠ
In the tradition of Super Junior events, or so I’m told, Saturday was a rainy day. Despite the bad weather, I arrived at the stadium a little after twelve to get in line for fan merchandise (that went on sale at two). After I purchased my merch, a light stick and an eco bag, I met up with some friends at a cafe called Who’s Tea which is where we stayed till the concert was about to begin.
Kyu’s concert began a little after seven pm and lasted for roughly two and a half hours. I laughed, I cried, and I got very emotional during the concert. Blah Blah was the very first song Kyu sang and it was evident that his voice was not in the best condition due to the fire accident. I don’t feel like going into the fire accident controversy, but I can say with absolute certainty that the reason Kyu cried multiple times during the concert was because he was moved by the fan events (應援). Despite his condition, he still sounded heavenly to my ears.
One of Kyuhyun’s catchphrases is “你們現在收看的是…圭賢 (You’re watching … Kyuhyun)” but instead of answering Kyuhyun as usual we answered 내 남자 (My man). At first, he did not understand our Korean, but he was visibly flustered which was absolutely adorable to watch.
To be honest, Kyu’s Chinese is not as good as it once was, which is why I was doubly impressed with the fact that he spoke Chinese nearly the whole time, save for one of the last ments. And the part were he said ‘a little’ in Japanese instead of Chinese. Even the acting parts were done in Chinese, and he said that the reason he was up late was because he was memorizing his lines in Chinese. Kyu’s dedication to everything he does is one of the reasons I admire and love him so much.
Despite the fact that Kyuhyun is nearing 30 (or already 30 if you use Korean age) there were so many moments were he was way too adorable for words. He patted himself on the head multiple times, did his signature both hands pointing to the sky move, and danced to Twice’s Cheer Up just to name a few. Kyu was also, and I say this with affection, cocky at times. For example, he thanked us for selling out his concert in 3 minutes, then he asked why it wasn’t 2 minutes. Kyu also said that most singers don’t really listen to their own songs, but he does. At least 10 times a day.
The concert set list was similar to the ones held in Seoul and Busan, so I was well aware of the fact that he’d be doing a duet with himself. However, I was still fooled when he said,” let’s welcome the special guest!” I’ve also seen many clips of GyuWhy rapping, but nothing beats seeing it in person. Seriously though, is there anything Kyu can’t do?
Kyuhyun has been in many musicals, which most of us have not had the opportunity to see, which is why he did a medley of musical theater songs. He sang <Mozart>나는 나는 음악+<Wether>발길을 뗄 수 없으면+<The Days>사랑했지만. Kyu also did little skits in between, like the part where he pretended a glass bottle of water was alcohol and promptly got drunk. And the part where he got bitten by zombies and had limited time to live. Being the dork Kyu is, he pretended to become a zombie, and then shot himself with a toy gun. If I remember correctly, he pointed the toy gun at the audience as well. But before he ‘turned into a zombie/died, ‘ he wrote a letter to ELFs saying that he would be gone for two years and that we should stay healthy, not forget about him … Truthfully, I teared up a bit at that point. Just the thought of his enlistment is turning me into an emotional mess.
For the Chinese medley, Kyu sang 新不了情+那些年+聽海. And he also sang 林俊傑’s 不為誰而作的歌. The first three songs are songs Kyu has sung quite a few times, while 不為誰而作的歌 is a new one. Needless to say, Kyu sang every song beautifully. While he was singing these songs, we had a special 天燈 fan event which brought Kyu to tears and made him unable to sing for a while. Just looking at those fan cams with a red eyed Kyu just make me want to cry all over again.
Being a member of the legendary Kpop boy group Super Junior, there was no way he wouldn’t sing a single SJ song at his solo concert. Kyu sang Magic and Devil, and I’m proud to say that I knew most of the fan chant to Devil thanks to watching their music show performance videos way too many times. I must say, with love of course, that KRY dancing to SuJu’s songs without the other members is a *ahem* interesting sight to see. Which is probably why I’m a big fan of KRY’s dancing as well.
For the final song of the concert, Kyuhyun sang a Chinese/Korean hybrid version of At Gwanghwamun. Our final fan event was singing the Chinese & Korean choruses of At Gwanghwamun, which moved Kyu to tears again. Needless to say, Kyu was not the only one. By the end of the song, I could hear the sound of people crying all around me.
규현 오빠 사랑해요! Fulfill your military service well and we’ll be here waiting for you when you return!
