Being me, I decided to figure out exactly when I fell in love with Super Junior. The first method I tried was to scroll through my youtube watch history. After a good 10 minutes of infinite scrolling and pressing the load more button countless times, chrome crashed on me. Next, I checked my browser history. The problem is that I clear my browser history regularly so that did not work out either. Then I remembered facebook’s activity log. At that point, it was simply a matter of finding the time point when I started liking anything and everything SJ related. The Answer: May 2016!
This entire post will basically be me fangirling over 슈퍼주니어(Super Junior), you’ve been warned!
Honestly, I used to be very anti-kpop, basically anti all types of k-entertainment. Simply because I had preconceived notions of it. Not that it would be the first time, case in point, I looked at the summary of the Hunger Games and thought it sounded really boring. That was before I read and reread the trilogy too many times to count.
Running Man (fan since October 2015), helped me break my preconceptions of k-entertainment. And I may or may not have watched 300+ episodes of RM since then. Sorry Sorry was a huuuuuuuuggggggeeeeeee hit back in 2009 so I’ve known about Super Junior for quite some time, but I didn’t fall for them until quite recently. Henry’s guest appereance on a variety/talk show called Happy Together caught my attention first. After getting a glimpse of how talented he is, I googled him and found out that he’s a member of Super Junior-M. (At that time I didn’t understand the whole concept of sub-groups so I thought he was a member of the main group.) I remembered from watching Infinite Challenge’s finding the sixth man special that Siwon was also a member of Super Junior (though my attention was on Kwanghee at the time) and thought that I should definitely look into the group that these two belong to. My logic being that if the two members are so freaking awesome, then the group as a whole must be out of this world. Glad that my logic didn’t fail me.
I started watching them on variety shows, I think A Song for You was the first one I watched, and was blown away by how dorky, hilarious, talented and well, crazy they are. After falling in love with their personalities from watching various variety shows, I started listening to their music and fell in love with it as well. I used to think that K-pop was just bubblegum pop with cheesy synchronised dance moves, but it’s so much more than that. Nearly half of the songs on Super Junior’s albums are ballads and the main vocals: KRY (Kyuhyun, Ryeowook, Yesung) are true vocal powerhouses, not that the other members aren’t amazing as well.
I truly love all the members, including Henry and Zhoumi, so picking a bias is nearly impossible. But if I really really really had to choose, I’d have to say KRY, D&E, Leeteuk, and Henry. 😛 I’m kind of disappointed at myself for not being an ELF till more than 10 years since their debut, if only I had fallen in love with them earlier I could have seen them in the flesh this February or at one of their concerts last year. I may not have been an ELF from the beginning, but I will be one to the end, which is hopefully a very long time later.
At least, I did get to see Henry’s movie Final Recipe, which I really loved, last week.
And I’ll be going to Heechul’s fanmeeting next month, yay! This marks the end of my fangirling, for now at least.
